Often people need to get debt help before they can find financial independence. Consider that in 2005, the Bureau of Economic Analysis found that American spent more than they earned which was the first time this occurred since the Great Depression.

If you don’t have a reserve fund, you become a slave to your expenses and bills, including credit cards. As a result, you wind up living from paycheck to paycheck to try to reach your financial goals. A first step is to work toward paying off high interest credit cards. Pay off one at a time and cease using the cards. If you are overwhelmed, consider credit counseling and debt consolidation. Make whatever money you do have work for you.

Once you start paying off those debts, save a little. Even if its a few bucks every week, save money that you don’t touch so you always have a reserve fund. If a life changing event occurs, you will have a bit of money put aside to take some of the stress out of a situation such as getting laid off work or a family member’s illness.

Finally, stock to a budget. Create a worksheet so you can get out of the trap of living paycheck to paycheck. Cut costs, set goals and get debt help to gain the financial independence you dream of.
